Election Night in Canada

Election nights are always exciting. So much can change in one evening. I’ve always been interested in politics so I enjoy being a part of the process. Being an active member of our democracy was always important in my home growing up, and my own mother worked for elections Canada this year. As someone that has lived most of his adult life overseas, being able to actively participate in the last two elections has been a joy. This year was my second campaign working with Salma Zahid. I worked on her campaign in 2019, and she has held the riding of Scarborough Centre for the Liberal Party since 2015.

A Covid Election

This year was different. It was reassuring that while following covid protocols, from the view of a photographer, everything ran like any other campaign. Of course, the methods of reaching out to the community were different, but I felt a sense of normal with my interactions with the campaign, and any sense of normalcy is welcome in this new world we live in. It really felt like the entire community came out to support during the day and the numbers that came in during election night show that. A lot of familiar faces from 2019, high schoolers, and families all came out to support on election day. It wouldn’t be right to not acknowledge the number of strong women that I have worked with on each of Zahid’s campaigns.

Capturing Election Night

Every campaign is full of excitement on election night. You feel the tension in the room leading into the vote counts, even for an established incumbent like Zahid. The feeling of release and joy when the MP is secure in their election is palpable. The results came in so quickly, the crowd was cheering before Zahid eve had the chance to arrive! It was wonderful to see the people that had come out to support in 2019 again and meet the new supporters this year.
